Nature  -  Latest posts  /  Geology  -  Latest posts  /  Caves  -  Latest posts  /  Stalagmites and Stalactites   Harrison’s Cave, An Underground Adventure in Barbados Stalagmites and Stalactites   Stalagmites  /   Stalactites Stalactites and stalagmites are formed by water dripping or flowing from fractures on the ceiling of a cave . They are the most common types of speleothems in caves. In caves, stalagmites grow rather slowly—0.00028–0.037 in/yr (0.007–0.929 mm/yr)—while in artificial tunnels and basements they grow much faster. Soda straw stalactites are the fastest growing (up to 1.57 in/yr, 40 mm/yr), but most fragile stalactites in caves. Soda straw stalactites form along a drop of water and continue growing down from the cave ceiling forming a tubular stalactite, which resembles a drinking straw in appearance. Their internal diameter is exactly equal to the diameter of the water drop. Formatio...

Christmas Tree is New Massive Ice Climb in China

Εικόνα
There are a number of ice routes in the Henan province of China, but the new Christmas Tree WI5/6 is the most spectacular. It was first climbed by Liu Yang and Chaun last week.  You can see why it is named Christmas Tree. It is unknown how often the route has formed, but there seems to be a number of potential lines, including a massive cave at the base that leads to daggers. Look for more on the Christmas Tree in a future issue of Gripped magazine.

Attalea speciosa (Babassu) Attalea speciosa, the babassu, babassu palm, babaçu, or cusi, is a palm native to the Amazon Rainforest region in South America. The babassu palm is the predominant species in the Maranhão Babaçu forests of Maranhão and Piauí states.   Babassu palms in Brazil This plant has commercial value because its seeds produce an edible oil called babassu oil, which is also used in cleaners and skin-care products.  The fruit is used to produce products such as medicines, beauty aids, and beverages. Traditional communities of the Maranhão region also produce a flour from the fruit, and this is commercialized as a nutritional supplement. The leaves are also used to provide thatch for houses and can be woven into mats for constructing house walls. The stems are used for timbers. The babassu palm is considered a weed in pasture areas of Cerrado vegetation in Brazil. Taxonomy In his 1995 The Palms of the Amazon, Andrew Henderson recognised A. speciosa and A. sp...

Hot spring Viruses of Yellowstone's Acidic Hot Springs A hot spring is a spring produced by the emergence of geothermally heated groundwater that rises from the Earth's crust. While some of these springs contain water that is a safe temperature for bathing, others are so hot that immersion can result in an injury or death. Definitions There is no universally accepted definition of a hot spring. For example, one can find the phrase hot spring defined as any geothermal spring a spring with water temperatures above its surroundings a natural spring with water temperature above human body temperature (normally between 36.5 and 37.5 °C (97.7 and 99.5 °F) a thermal spring with water warmer than 36.7 °C (98 °F) a natural spring of water greater than 21.1 °C (70 °F) (synonymous with thermal spring) a natural discharge of groundwater with elevated temperatures a type of thermal spring in which hot water is brought to the surface. The water temperature of a hot spring is usually 6.5 °C (...

Species  -  Latest posts  /  Genres  -  Latest posts  /  Others  -  Latest posts  /   Mollusca Bobtail squid Bobtail squid (order Sepiolida) are a group of cephalopods closely related to cuttlefish. Bobtail squid tend to have a rounder mantle than cuttlefish and have no cuttlebone. They have eight suckered arms and two tentacles and are generally quite small (typical male mantle length being between 1 and 8 cm (0.39 and 3.15 in)). Sepiolids live in shallow coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean and some parts of the Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean as well as in shallow waters on the west coast of the Cape Peninsula off South Africa. Like cuttlefish, they can swim by either using the fins on their mantle or by jet propulsion. They are also known as "dumpling squid" (owing to their rounded mantle) or "stubby squid" Light organ Bobtail squid have a symbiotic relationship with bioluminescent bacteria (Aliivibrio fischeri), which ...
